View Thread : Where's that extra content again?

Dark Jaguar
As part of TC's new official holiday that ABF started, I ask this of Lucasarts/Bioware. Where's that downloadable content for Knights of the Old Republic? It's been almost a year now, hasn't it?

Now, this game is very fun indeed, but I've been waiting for this extra stuff for some time. Did they just decide not to, rendering an entire option in the game a mere cosmetic anomoly, or is it just taking a LONG time? Basically, they should at least release a patch to fix the billions of glitches in the game. Namely, I'm sick of the freezing followed by teleporting into the future glitch. You know, where you stop, and then suddenly you are a mile away and getting killed by some monstrosity? At most they should add a whole mission or two where you actually get to pilot one of those scissory looking ships for a bit (though that would of course require a whole new engine :D), and maybe a race track where people get to all race at the same time, you know, to really add everything from all the Star Wars movies in there.

Anyway, actually I'm thinking that, if they didn't just cancel making the content completely, they are waiting to around the release of the last movie to release this content, probably with some special nod to that movie added, you know like the hidden ship in Rogue Squadron.

alien space marine
i thought that the extra content was the stuff they put into the pc version?I want a huge cloak like Revan had before he became the good guy (pending on how you play)

As for the Glitches , I never encounterd any of the fatal ones , Just lag and a little bit of freezing once or twice at the most.

Dark Jaguar
...

No...

There's an option in the game, it's called "Download Content". I'm talking XBox here...

Glitch is not a proper noun. You don't need to capitalize it except at the start of a sentence. That also applies to all the other normal nouns you capitalize.

I too managed to avoid the fatal ones, but there are sure a lot of nonfatals that get annoying. Besides the slowdown stuff, there's the fact that the whole D&D engine is always and I mean ALWAYS "on". There are too many times when the cinemas just don't look all that good because everyone is acting exactly like they would outside the cinema. That's sort of a problem with a lot of American RPGs. Japanese RPGs have all sorts of special actions and animations just for cinema scenes. The game does look pretty good, but the presentation during cinema scenes often times just looks glitchy because they just force the characters to behave the same as they do outside a cinema. That I don't expect to get fixed, but there's also lots of little things that kinda screw up fighting. Sometimes the spell effects will do some odd things that glitch up a battle, or you are allowed to run away from an area with the enemy in chase and activate some other cinema scene, and kinda screw up the whole flow of the game. This has caused me to fight two major enemies at once before :D.

Namely, there's just way too many glitches for me to list. Go to GameFAQs. They have an entire guide on the game's glitches there. Good game, but I think it could have used some more time in the oven before taking it out.

OB1
I still don't know what's taking them so long to release the first download. It was supposed to be released a while ago, I think.

And MS says that they will not release patches for X-Box games because basically it means that their QA isn't good enough (which it isn't), but they did release a "special update" for Unreal Championship which was basically a patch, so perhaps they'll do that for Kotor.

OB1
Ok I checked the bioware forums and originally they said that the downloadable content would be released soon after the PC version came out, but now the official word is that the content is finished but they're making sure that it's bug-free.

A Black Falcon
But will there be a PC version of this "content"?

Oh and it just makes me sad that I'm increasingly having to push Lucasarts the way of Sierra -- 'they WERE one of my favorite game companies'. :(

I wish it was still ARE.

OB1
I don't think the PC version will get the same extra content. Splinter Cell never did.

Dark Jaguar
I just checked those forums...

Holy Bejeezus!

Well, I... guess I'm not the first to have a problem with this. I read a few of the early pages and the last one (knew from the start I wouldn't be reading the whole thing). I found out one extra thing. It seems that the content is only supposed to be all the stuff added to the PC version pretty much.

Eh, well it's a whole new location. Still, a few glitch fixes would be nice. Even Nintendo has released a glitch fix recently for Pokemon. I wasn't even aware they had set up the Gem series so it COULD be patched. MS shouldn't shy away from allowing patches for glitches just because it might make them look bad to a small group. To anyone who would actually think about it, it makes them look like they care enough to fix the problems that show up.

Anyway, from checking the end compaired to the second or so page, I can tell the whole thing has basically been the exact same dead horse beaten repeatedly. It's really no wonder Bioware has kinda ignored that thread. It's all the same stuff. That in mind, I refuse to respond to it for the same reason I'll never post at the Adult Swim boards. I don't want to associate myself with them.

OB1
New location? What?

Dark Jaguar
Apparently there's a space station added to the PC version.

A Black Falcon
"those forums"?

OB1
Really, a space station? They said the content was just going to be cool new items and lightsabers and stuff.

Dark Jaguar
From what I've read, the extra content is supposed to be everything added to the PC version. Hearing that, I read what was added to the PC version, and one of the prominant items was a space station orbiting some planet somewhere. No missions or anything there it seems, just a hub for buying some items, namely most of the extra items added to the PC version.

Dark Jaguar
And, right around the time I ask for it, it comes out! I'm just that powerful.

Enjoy the goodness of all the PC extras COMBINED with the glitches of the XBox version!

alien space marine
I dont have Xbox live :(

OB1
I didn't think the PC version got that space station, but who cares. I'm happy that it's finally available! I can't wait to get home tonight.

Dark Jaguar
And it seems all the extra items and stuff in the PC version are, rather than spread througout the game as I had previously assumed, all only available on this old space station.

Contrary to what I read, it's fully compatible with existing save files, so you don't HAVE to start a new game.

Nope, though I would have liked to see it, as expected not a single glitch was fixed. Though, had they done that the old save files would certainly not be compatible.

Well I'm glad that the online feature finally does something in the game. They HAD promised many more content packages, but I do believe this may be the only one, done only to appease people upset about the stuff the PC version got. Well, maybe they'll add more stuff. I'd like a few more side quests, or maybe alternate solutions to existing quests, maybe a new class or something. If they did a bug fix, I would certainly like it if they allowed you to backtrack after reaching the final area so you could go on little side quests you may have missed or forgotten at any time. Sure, it's kinda URGENT and you're in the middle of the final battle at that point, but hey all other RPGs, and adventures, allow you to just kinda walk off JUST before the final boss.

OB1
I can't wait until Jade Empire comes out. I hope it has huge environments instead of those small sections like Knights has.

Dark Jaguar
Indeed. Knights had some pretty large areas, for instance a few of the regions of the estates on that one planet, and the desert areas, but yeah most of it was kinda closed in and tunnely.

I'm looking forward to Jade as well, but with next to no news, I'm just kinda forgetting about it for now.

OB1
Well when I first saw KOTOR it looked like the areas would be enormous, kinda like how I imagine Fable's environments to be. That happens a lot to me since I love huge outdoor environments in games so much. I see a screen that makes the area looks huge and I get really excited about it. It happened with OoT and Shenmue I as well. I saw screen from both games and expected gigantic areas but was dissapointed when I finally got them. Thankfully Shenmue II had pretty sizeable environments as did Wind Waker (even if it cheated a bit). The dune sea bits in KOTOR were reasonably sized, but they were still split up into sections.

Dark Jaguar
Yeah I know what you mean. Really huge areas can really give the impression of a simply massive world you're a part of. I mean, it'd be nice to have something that REALLY seems the size of the open fields in LOTR. Of course, if it's JUST that big, but empty, then it's kinda dull. Having it be as diverse an area as one would expect a real massive open expanse of land to be means you won't get bored as you go to the top of that hill and find a field of flowers, which you promptly pick as you skip along after killing the bandits.

OB1
I would LOVE to be able to run along the side of a huge hill, get to the top and pick some flowers, then look down at the huge world below. Big and bland like Morrowind would be bad (even if it had a decent draw distance), but something like the meadows in Dantooine (all of the areas but w/o blocks and split up into sections) would be really great.

When the first shots of Fable were released I got extremely excited over the prospects of simply running up a huge mountain and enjoying the virtual scenery. This shot in particular gave me that feeling, but the game doesn't look quite that good anymore, and I don't want to get my hopes up for a huge world. The closest thing to that scope in the current screens is right below the old one, and as you can see it doesn't look quite the same. The devs at the bigbluebox forums say the game looks better than it does in recent screens but not quite as good as the very first screens, but I've never been able to get a solid response regarding the environment sizes.

Not as old:

Dark Jaguar
Well, going on just those two pics alone, and ignoring the lesser sharpness of the second, I'm tempted to say that the things that make the second so much worse are the grass rather than the colorful flowers and the way the hill kinda wraps around and slopes into the valley in the first, as opposed to how it seems more like you're on a cliff seperated from the valley in the second. Oh yes, those mountain tops just aren't as nice either...

I will say that there's been a huge amount of recalled features in Fable recently... It's rather disappointing. I mean, I know each cancelled bit was hard on the developers to remove, but perhaps they should have known they were overly ambitious from the start. Really, I remember when the game was supposed to allow you to create your own monsters and then let you kill them in over 12000 different ways, WITH VIRTUAL BERRIES! Well, I still am really looking forward to it. It seems it'll still allow you to play the game as you want, but just not to the degree the makers had originally hoped for.

One thing about Jade Empire. I certainly hope the save files are small enough to fit on my memory card. It's rather annoying to know that I'll never be able to move my KOTOR save files to another XBox, or the XBox 2 (assuming they get smart and give it a hard drive and backwards compatibility).

A Black Falcon
Newer games generally use more, not less, space. Especially if you have a HDD and don't bother to pay much attention to file sizes...

Oh, and truly huge areas are nice but usually games like to make things seem huge but in actuality have them be smaller... still many games to have nicely large areas. But the ones that have really massive areas sacrifice detail, like Morrowind... I'm not sure if you can have both.

OB1
Like I said, the newest build looks a lot better than that second screen, but not quite as sharp as the first one.

Dark Jaguar
Hopefully what that's supposed to mean is that it's got the color and diversity of textures of the first, even if it's still blurry.

OB1
Their main concern with the environments has been to make each and every inch of the game beautiful or interesting, not bland like Morrowind. You'll see lots of pretty meadows and forests that reflect the environment of where the developers are located(Vermont, I think).

Create your own monsters? I never heard of that. And aside from the multiplayer and some MS censorship (can't kill kids, take kids on adventures with you, etc.) I can't think of anything major that they took out of the game. When it was first announced they just gave us somewhat vague descriptions of gameplay features which pretty much went wild in our minds because the possibilities are endless when you have no real boundaries, and as the years passed they explained how they would work and things got a bit more realistic.

Dark Jaguar
Well, my example was purely a joke you know. I never thought one could ACTUALLY build their own monsters that can be killed 12000 different ways with virtual berries alone... Yes, it's not as bad as all that (really? You can't take kids along? But, Final Fantasy does it all the time, and so do a LOT of games, and so did 50's cheesy super hero cartoons!), but still a lot of stuff has been sorta nixed. I guess it was in the sense you say, that they weren't specific on what you could and couldn't do at first and slowly they started telling us the limitations.

alien space marine
They need a Sequeil!

Starwars knights of the new republic.

*whips asm* YOU ARE NOT FIT TO WEAR FRY'S LEOTARD!

Ah, okay then.

Yeah originally you were going to be able to kill kids and take kids on adventures with you, but MS had a problem with that so as of right now there's definitely no kid-killing but I'm not completely certain about the other thing.

Dark Jaguar
Well, what about normal civilians? Don't get me wrong, I had no real plans to go on a homocidal child killing spree, but for the occasional raid across town, wouldn't it seem rather odd to only be able to kill certain innocent bystanders? I suppose leaving a town of orphans to starve to death is far more kind?

<img src="http://images.nuklearpower.com/comics/031104.png">

OB1
Well in some towns you have to leave your weapons at the door, while in others you can bring them in. You can still have a fist fight with people, and I believe you can still poison their water supply and kill the entire town, but I don't know if that feature is stil in.

Dark Jaguar
Poison the water supply? I'll do it! Haven't heard of something like that since...

CYAN: THOU SHALT DIE FOR THINE TRANSGRESSIONS!

Uh oh...

OB1
Read this recent FAQ (http://www.lhtimes.com/faqs/fable.htm) as it'll tell you what the current progress of the game is.

I'm so incredibly excited about Fable, the seemingly unlimited possibilies it offers. I know I'm going to be playing it over and over just to make my crappy outfits popular.

Dark Jaguar
That FAQ answers a few questions. Like I said, I'm still REALLY looking forward to it, and it's obvious there's still a lot of freedom in the game, but you know, some of the things they removed are just a tad frustrating... The lack of the horsies and the inability to swim I can deal with well enough I suppose (though those WOULD have been sweet :D). The lack of customizing the gender also kinda sucks. It's not all that important to me really. It's just that in pretty much any game where you can design your main character from scratch that's always allowed, except in this one. It would just be nice for that added bit of customization, ya know? Well, that too I can deal with well enough and still love the rest of what the game provides. However, the biggest deal, like what OB1 thinks, is calling back the multiplayer like OB1 said. Well, that's odd, off topic to the point where we actually discuss the topic of ANOTHER thread. Oh well :D. Anyway, the multiplayer was certainly something I was REALLY looking forward to in a game of this sort of freedom. I'll still end up getting it I'm sure, but you know... I really wanted the multi, and maybe some really nice voice masks so I'd be able to really role play those characters online.

Well, with the stuff they've had to take out I just hope for ONE thing now. I certainly hope they keep Live support open and design the game to support online updates. After the game is released, they can then release the bits they couldn't add during the normal scheduling like horse riding and swimming (to allow bodies of water to still be a barrier, just add a fatigue meter like in Wind Waker), and the ability to design a female character, and eventually multiplayer. So, let's just hope they at least have a content download option in the game when it's released.

OB1
Yeah the way topics work here is crazy. It's like they migrate from thread to thread and there's no controlling them.

OB1
Hey I've got a question for you. Is it kind of weird for you to play a game like Harvest Moon or Fable where you control a guy who has to court and marry a girl? I mean I think it'd be weird for me to play Harvest Moon For Girls (seriously, it's coming out this fall) and try to get a guy to marry me. :D

Dark Jaguar
Why would it be weird?

Yeah I heard about the GCN Harvest Moon gender split thing with the two versions of the same game. Considering that every previous Harvest Moon allowed you to pick that at the start, it's pretty weird that they would be releasing each seperatly. Generally, if it turns out the story is different depending on the gender, I will have a game for each one (like in Sword of Mana and Knights of the Old Republic). In order to do that here you have to pay more. I wish they had just packed both into the same game like they had before. I guess the new one is very different from start to end and that's why they had to actually delay that so much. I wonder if they'll pull that with Fable and release a "for girls" version of that too? Still, the idea that they would design each one and label them as FOR a specific gender kinda insults people who like to role play everything. Men did used to do all female roles in old plays long ago. Yes, that was a result of a very closed minded viewpoint at the time, but you get my point.

Finally, if you find it that weird to do something of the sort, is there something you're AFRAID of OB1? :D

Eh, anyway I hope this doesn't become a trend. I've loved being able to play whatever role I wish, and I certainly hope it doesn't get to the point where I can only do that by paying for TWO versions of a game.

A Black Falcon
Fatigue meter? But the fatigue meter for swimming in WW is really annoying...

Dark Jaguar
I suppose it is, as it could have had a longer timer on it considering. However, it was put in place to prevent you from being able to go to places you shouldn't be able to get to at that point. It was a control. Like I said though, considering the vast distances between isles, they could have boosted the timer on that substantially without making the timer useless.

OB1
Why would it be weird?
Because you're a girl...

Finally, if you find it that weird to do something of the sort, is there something you're AFRAID of OB1?
Yes, I am afraid of becoming a woman! :D

Hey I love dressing up my guys in women's clothes (can't wait to get a bonnet for my Fable guy!), and I enjoy lots of games where you control a female character, but I dunno, I think it would be kind of weird to try to court a guy and try to get him to marry me in a game. But that's just me.

Dark Jaguar
Ah, so you would feel weird role playing a girl trying to get a guy or something, but at the same time you have no problem willingly dressing up a male character you are playing as as a girl. Okay then.

OB1
Yeah... I just love the reactions I get from NPCs in games like Morrowind when I dress a man in women's clothing, and with Fable it's going to be even cooler because you can actually make your style popular and townsfolk will copy you!

Dark Jaguar
Okay then...

I'll just be going... this way now...

OB1
Don't pretend you don't find that funny!

Dark Jaguar
I wasn't. It's VERY funny...

A Black Falcon

I agree, except for the part about dressing a guy in a girl's clothes... :D

Dark Jaguar
Well if you want some advice when role playing as a girl in those types of games... (And I only give this because apparently you lack this experience...) (Also, yes I know this freakish girl is mostly bald...) (Also, the "Go Advanced" button just made me think of Gameboys...)

OB1
Can't a guy dress his male character as a girl and not get stared at? You're supposed to do stuff like that in games! Do things you'd never do in real life. Like jump on turtles and run over people in cars.

Dark Jaguar
Hey we never made fun of you, out loud anyway.

OB1
I know what you two were thinking...

Dark Jaguar
DO you? Whatever you say, you said it not us, meaning YOU were thinking it all by yourself. :D

OB1

Dark Jaguar
That eye roll is very effeminate. Just sayin' is all.

OB1
:whatever:
