View Thread : Star Wars: Galaxies

Has anyone else started to take an interest in this...? If it's half as fucking incredible as it seems, it'll be, literally and hand down, the fucking best game ever...if you don't know, it's a game that you play online...an enormously massive online game, where you take an minor role in the Star Wars universe, and lead a life...you have a job, a home...exploring enormous worlds; you can choose what race you are, do combat...do whatever you want; like a real 'life simulator', in the Star Wars universe!!

OB1
The game does intrigue me, but I'm gonna try my best not to buy it. I don't want to spend all of my free time playing a game, and I don't want to pay a monthly fee for it.

I know it's not about Star Wars: Galaxies, but that doesn't matter!! :D

A Black Falcon
Yeah, its a perfect example of why Penny Arcade is, a lot of the time, more stupid than funny.

I could say the same thing about those liberal comic you love so much, but...I won't. :)

I wasn't trying to be funny. I'm dead serious. I don't want to get Galaxies because I don't want to have to spend all of my free time on one game.

And PA is awesome. Name one online comic strip that's funnier than them, ABF. Just go ahead and try.

A Black Falcon
Hmm... how many do you want? I just don't find PA's brand of incredibly stupid humor funny at all most of the time... like that one or its followup. Vaguely amusing, sorta... but just so STUPID that its not really funny at all...

The funniest webcomic is 8-Bit Theater. No question.

http://www.nuklearpower.com

Other webcomics I like... all are better than PA in one way or another. Most in several ways... though this is quite a variety of types of strips.

http://www.megatokyo.com - not the funniest webcomic, but its probably my favorite one.

Oh, pretty much all of those are pretty story heavy and benefit greatly from starting from the beginning.

There are other good webcomics too, but those are most of the ones I read regularly and most of the ones absolutely better than PA. Not all, but most.

Maybe you just want to laugh at dumb humor, but I like many of those because of how they do tell a story... something I like in strips...

Want me to list more good webcomics?

Dark Jaguar
ABF, you need to start learning to laugh at yourself and your own beliefs. BOTH members of Penny Arcade LOVE Star Wars.

I remember you saying when I made some harmless jokes insulting things I loved: "I don't understand why you would say that then.". It's FUNNY! If you can't learn to laugh at yourself, you'll end up starting a war over something.

A Black Falcon

I don't get it DJ... what are you complaining about? That I don't find PA funny? But their humor is so STUPID... its got games in it but that's not where the humor comes from. The humor is just standard 'ha ha isnt really, incredibly dumb stuff funny' humor like that strip. And its just not funny. There or anywhere else that uses stupid humor.

That's a big part of why I dislike almost all sitcoms... their "humor" isn't remotely funny...

He asked for better strips than PA. I listed 11 and could have listed 10 or 11 more that are at worst slightly worse than it. You have some huge problem with that?

"Laugh at my own beliefs"? I don't see how that relates to PA...

Oh, I'll list those 14 in the next level down (imo). Not as good as the first list. Some of them would be better if they updated more than, oh, monthly... at best... this is most of the webcomics i've got bookmarked. There are a few others but I don't read them much...

8-Bit is funny, but not laugh out loud funny. Megatokyo isn't even slightly funny, and PvP stopped being funny a long, long time ago. I'll have to check out those other sites later today.

Great Rumbler
Penny Arcade is funny in the same way that Aqua Teen Hunger Force is funny: they both involve bizarre situations and have characters that are crazy and/or stupid.

And just because it doesn't have a real story doesn't mean it isn't funny.

OB1
Well I want to a bunch of those sites ABF listed. Not very funny at all, I'm afraid. But to each his own.

And GR, you should check out the comic book "Milk and Cheese". It's written by Evan Dorken, one of the writers on SGCTC back the day, and it's really funny.

A Black Falcon
Megatokyo was funny at the beginning... the early strips were funny. Its more of a drama now, but as I said... a lot of those aren't humor comics they're more stories...

And 8-bit is funnier than PA, no question.

The rest of the ones in that first list are all funnier than PA too... though many do have storylines that really require starting at the beginning to really get it...

OB1
Doesn't even come close. PA is funny, while those others are just mildly amusing.

PA is the Far Side or Calvin and Hobbes of the online comics world while most of those you listed are like the Ziggies or Family Circus.

A Black Falcon
Mildly amusing? No, I disagree... but even mildly amusing is usually funnier than PA...

Oh, and Calvin and Hobbes and The Far Side are the two best comics ever. PA isn't within a thousand miles of them.

Ziggy and Family Circus? Awful strips... Family Circus is the least funny comic strip ever... Uhh... I very seriously doubt that you looked very much at any of the ones in that first list. Because that just is not the way any of them are...

As for Megatokyo is really is more like a manga than a newspaper comic.

OB1
Sorry bubba, but none of those strips you posted are even vaguely funny except for 8-Bit, and that's nowhere near as funny as PA.

A Black Falcon
Yeah. And Family Circus is a good depiction of American life.

OB1
Wha? That made about as much sense as Darunia's usual posts.

A Black Falcon
Hmm... simpler? How about You are WRONG! ? :)

Great Rumbler
ABF, you don't know what you're talking about. Penny Arcade is funny.

http://www.penny-arcade.com/images/2003/20030505l.gif

:)

A Black Falcon
Classic PA stupid-humor.

I'd post comics from other strips but all of my favorites actually have "continuity" and "story" and don't make nearly as much sense if you haven't read the whole archive....

And there are so many that are way better than anything from PA... including most every strip in the 8-Bit archive... its one of the very few that actually IS laugh-out-loud funny.

OB1
OMG, GR!!! His comics have story and continuity, both key ingredients in making something funny!!!!

.....

Oh wait, that's actually what makes drama good, not comedy.

Great Rumbler
OMG, GR!!! His comics have story and continuity, both key ingredients in making something funny!!!!

OMG, really!!!!11

A good story can lend to something to make it funnier, but it certaintly isn't necessary. Just becuase something is intended to be funny and has a story doesn't mean that it is.

Let's look at Aqua Teen Hunger Force. The story of A.T.H.F being a group that fights crime is never used in the series. They never once fight crime. Also every episode is about something different from the other ones. Does that mean that because it doesn't have a story it isn't funny? NO!! It's one of the funniest series ever!

OB1
Same thing goes for Far Side.

Great Rumbler
Yep, Far Side is a very funny comic.

I wish Gary Larson would make some new ones. :(

OB1
Well you know, making single-panel comic strips is too difficult. He needs time to... to uh, sit in his hammock and drink iced tea.

A Black Falcon
Its not like anything without a real continuing plot is BAD... its just that I like story in shows.

And there's nothing wrong with a webcomic having more drama than comedy.

Oh, Calvin and Hobbes is my favorite comic strip ever. That one was just so amazing...

Great Rumbler

There is when you keep trying to say they are "funnier" than Penny Arcade! Now if you were to say they are more "dramatic" than Penny Arcade...

A Black Falcon
Other webcomics I like... all are better than PA in one way or another. Most in several ways... though this is quite a variety of types of strips.

Means not all are funnier -- they're just all better, IMO.

If you're talking about better story, then, yes, they are better tha PA in that area, but if you're talking about better humor then PA has them beat.

Darunia
Web comics all suck. Garfield is king.

[British accent]You're a loony![/British accent]

Although I have to agree that Garfield is one of the best comics around.

A Black Falcon
Yes, Garfield is great... its not as good as Doonesbury or For Better or For Worse (my favorite newspaper comics), but its very good.

On the other hand, Mark Trail stinks...

OB1
I can't stand Garfield anymore. I used to love it when I was younger, but I haven't laughed at a single strip since the late 90's.

A Black Falcon
Repetitive, sure... but funny. Like Beetle Bailey or Blondie...

OB1
Ew, those two are even worse. They're just not funny.

A Black Falcon
Yes they are! Sure they're getting a bit old, but they ARE funny... for not funny strips (that were once funny) look at the last decade or so of Peanuts, or B.C....

OB1
You've got to be kidding me.

A Black Falcon
About what?

OB1
Those comics suck! The only funny comic strips from the past few decades are Calvin and Hobbes and Far Side.

A Black Falcon
You must not read newspaper comics much because some are pretty funny.

OB1
This is kinda funny though. http://www.bobandgeorge.com/Archive/May03.php?date=7

A Black Falcon
Yes, given how I put that comic in my top list, I do think its quite funny...it doesn't even remotely take itsself seriously (the author is a character in the strip...), but that's much of why it is funny... good strip. And like most of the strips I listed it benifits a LOT from reading the archive. :)

I'd link funny ones, but its funny a lot...

OB1
I didn't see that in your list. But then again, I didn't click on every single one of them since you listed around fifty of them.

A Black Falcon
Its in that first list -- list of 'ones better than PA'. As opposed to that second group which some of are better than and some of are worse than PA.

OB1
None of them are anywhere near as funny as PA.

A Black Falcon
Then you must REALLY, REALLY love stupid humor.

OB1
No I like good humor, not the kind that makes you cringe at the lamess of it all.

A Black Falcon
But that perfectly describes PA!

OB1
This coming from the guy who likes Beatle Bailey and Blondie.

A Black Falcon
I said that they are funny and decent comics, sure... not great comics, but good.

OB1
You seriously find them to be funny?

A Black Falcon
Well they aren't NOT funny..

OB1
Yes they are.

A Black Falcon
I think we have estabished that in many cases what comics we think are funny are quite different several times now...

OB1
Hahaha, I think so too.

A Black Falcon
So about all we can agree on is that this is the best one ever?

http://www.ucomics.com/calvinandhobbes/

Several years ago they started doing the comics one day at a time... they're at 1992 now, so the archive won't be complete until christmas 2005.

Though I have enough of the books that I've got almost all of the comics ever made (I don't have the exclusive comics from two of the three 3-book collections (I only have Authoritive), or the newest re-collection or two.. have several, but not the one that came out last year... not sure about the one before that. Probably.)

OB1
Yes, Calvin and Hobbes is the greatest comic strip ever.
