Ah, I thought that page was still up somewhere, but I couldn't find it. Thank you ABF.

The page was easy enough for anyone with FTP access to find, but like all of the archive pages the links all were for tendocity.net so it was somewhat hard to use... DJ just fixed it, so here's the repaired link.
... So anyone want to get to work on www.tcforums.com/archives -- this is the Rumble City archives, with some selected threads mostly from its last days. or the massive archive located in www.tcforums.com/noncgi (ftp access just about needed -- there's no index or posts list pages. Just numbered posts (six digits, starting at 000001) in /forum1/html/######.html to /forum11/html/######.html... ftp access is invaluable here.)? -- this is the Tendocity.net archive, with lots of threads from its UBB days in '01 and '02. when we had a homepage... www.tcforums.com/previews/index.shtml www.tcforums.com/previews/news/08-01/news.shtml www.tcforums.com/release/index.shtml www.tcforums.com/reviews/index.shtml www.tcforums.com/news/index.shtml www.tcforums.com/news/news-archive-links.txt (news-archive.shtml doesn't work) And every single (internal) link on every one of those pages is broken... or nonexistant.

In 1000 years, I'll get right on it!
Okay sooner, but not now. Mebbe tomorrow... oh wait... okay sometime this week.

Yeah, the sheer scope of the project (especially the massive tendocity.net part...) is why Weltall has been saying that same thing ever since we moved to tcforums.com, with not much to show for it...

With the scope, I think I'll end up making some sort of batch editor for the thing... There's no other reasonable way to go about it.

Hell, I've been saying it since we WERE tendocity.net. It's just that even with the most streamlined methods I've been able to discover, each individual page takes a good ten to fifteen minutes to properly format. Consider that altogether we're looking at around three thousand pages, give or take, and you see why I've not yet found the time to make a sizable dent. If it's ever going to get done, we need a team to do it.

What archive was there to work on when we were tendocity.net? At that point most of the stuff I found on the server WAS the site (the homepage stuff was our homepage, the /noncgi folder with most of those thousands of threads was the forum, and you could access /archives and /creativity folders from the homepage...), right? Unless there's more archive somewhere that I couldn't find?

Actually Weltall (and you really need to change that avatar), I was suggesting a batch converting system. Some sort of basic "if this is there, replace it with this" stuff and then point it to each and every page and let the computer do all the work.

What's wrong with his avatar?
Boy, you really are the biggest prude in the galaxy. |

There is. I have not only every thread from tendocity.net, but also every thread on RC that was still on the server as of February 15, 2001, from Rumble, Ramble, ROTM, and of course Forum 5. If you remember abstractica, her and I went around every single thread on Rumble City for about four hours that final night, and we manually saved every single thread, and I have had them on my hard drive for the last four years.
There's more to this than you think. I've got it all. Save for the two months we used the Ikonboard (which I did not get to save), and what was on the Fallout Shelter, I have every thread ever posted on Rumble and Tendo City from June of 2000 to May of 2005. I hope you see now why this is such a tremendous task.

DJ doesn't like the female form. It's not like that's porn in his avatar or anything. It's the kind of thing you'd see in art class, for crying out loud.
DJ is totally a girl, btw. No doubt about it. |
|
Fri, May 6th, 2005 | #15 |
I don't know what art class YOU were taking... but I just finger painted...
Am I... am I supposed to draw the penis? ...Also you really read too much into casual comments. And Weltall, you aren't HEARING me. What I'm suggesting is something where the number of pages we'd need to alter is irrelevent. The only thing that matters is the variety of formats. I'm suggesting a BATCH EDITOR! Batch meaning a HUGE NUMBER of files. What you do is simply specify a directory full of files and give it some basic rules based on whatever format you are changing. You take a page or two, analyze them, come up with the rule set you'd need, set it all up, then let it run. When it's done, you have a bunch of fully altered pages. At most we'd just need to analyze all the formats and develop specific rule sets for each one. At least a single rule set would apply to all of them. It depends on exactly HOW converted you want all these things.

A couple of the Fallout Shelter/EZBoard posts are on archive.org, but not many... not sure about the Ikonboard.

I'd say it's somewhat in bad taste (to use stuff like that as an avatar... like that one of Lazy's too...), but whatever...

Yeah, same here, that's all, plus the motivation was certainly not for art's sake and we know it.

Man, you two are the biggest prudes I know. ABF is worse though, since he has a thing for anime cat-girls at the same time, which is pretty hypocritical...
And yes, that is very similar to what you see in any figure drawing class. How you could say that that's in bad taste is beyond me. I guess Michelangelo's "David" is in bad taste as well, right? |

Says you. I grabbed it because it looks nice. It would be in bad taste if she were shoving a dildo in her box, or if she in any other way displayed sexual intent. In this case, it's a pose, and it's tasteful, and I'm gonna keep it for a little bit.

Hypocritical? Possibly, but I guess it's a public-private thing... I wouldn't post such images, at least. Links? Probably not. I'd rather call it restraint or something than hypocricy, though. Like swearing, I don't anytime someone can hear me, and don't like to much at all (the main exception being being annoyed at a videogame, when I'm playing alone... )... and never on the internet. And a lot of such words I won't use (no, I won't list anything, that's going exactly against the point... Well, one. "Gay" as an insult. That's just incredibly insulting and derrogotory (sp) to homosexuals... sure, people say 'I didn't mean it that way'. Using the word means that you mean it that way, at least somewhat, and that's wrong.).

I can just imagine ABF sitting in his room, playing Gauntlet and looking around to make sure that nobody is there, and then telling the tv "go fuck yourself!".

No one's ever in my room at school. I keep the door locked.
... but I don't like swearing... I wouldn't say that... and anyway it's pretty infrequent. Out loud, for sure. Makes me feel guilty I guess...

OB1, read my post again, then tell me EXACTLY why you completely misread me. I want YOU to do it this time.
... Okay fine... .... ... ... ..... STOP MISREADING ME! ... Okay look, I made a comment off the side about this and you actually think it represents something about ME? It wasn't really all that serious! Yeesh, all I said was "okay Weltall, you have GOT to get rid of that". I didn't say "I am offended!" because I wasn't, but come on! Oh and, can I help it if the human form, gender regardless, disgusts me the way it disgusts a serial killer? ... Um... maybe I said too much... But yeah, evolution does take some mistaken paths considering the original reasons an organism would find a feature attractive are because it really does mean superior survival abilities, but then that part grows to the point of actually HINDERING survival, but attraction still exists. It's a defect in the evolutionary method that tends to end up pretty badly if it goes out of control... Humans have NO features that went out of control like that though, so um, I'm not sure why I said that. OB1, things are so black and white with you sometimes. Can't I believe two completely contradictory things AT ONCE without you being a baby about it? .... But anyway yeah, I use a ruler to draw lines. Since, well, a line HAS to be straight or it's not a line. ... I'm not an art student at all... Red Green Blue! THOSE are the primary colors, and black is the ABSENSE of all color! Ahahahaha! I annoy art students with stuff like that! Anyway yeah, when ABF said it was a bit "out of taste" that's the thing I agreed with. Oh, and yes I think curse words are bad form too. They are rude for one reason and one reason only, because society SAYS they are. But you know what? THAT'S A PERFECTLY GOOD WAY TO DEFINE WHAT IS AND IS NOT RUDE! In fact, it's the ONLY way. Those words have NO meaning to me, I'm not offended at all when people say them to me, because I'm a nerd, but I avoid them because it's good manners. You know, tact and grace aren't BAD qualities, they are signs you care about whether or not you are offending other people. Not caring what others think being a good quality applies to extreme moral situations, but not good manners, I mean yeesh... generally you SHOULD care what other people think. But I lost track here... Anyway, point is, "a boner is not a crime" and all, but there's a little thing called tact. I was under the assumption that Weltall posted that to "challenge the way we view the world" or just to "point out hipocracy" or something. And that, well, that's not exactly tasteful use of something like that. "Shock value" is an oxymoron, generally because of how insulting it is to assume no one but the people doing the stunt have ever thought outside the box before. If Weltall really did pick it for artistic reasons (is that that Hellen person you always go on about by any chance?), then well, eh, no big deal I guess...
